Experience with the new HP pavilion g Series(fun to u and heck for me)
Long time No see..?. Yes this will be my first blog, both technically and professionally.
This post may not seems to have any tips. But you may find.
Finally, I have my laptop(obviously i don’t want to say it is mine) in my hand. It is a HP pavilion g series laptop with windows 7 pre installed(it was bought for my sister and she don’t like to use it any more, since she utilized all demo gaming coins in the HP game center).
As a fond of Linux,I was so curious to fire up the box with the great engineering work by Mr.Torvalds. Initially I started experimenting the stuff with live CDs. While testing I experienced “Thermal Shutdown” warning in the BIOS screen for each cold and warm boot.
But unfortunately my mind started to think like “I can tweak it after the installation.”
I don’t have any x86_64 versions of installation mediums. Finally decided to go with Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit version.
My system configuration is,
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz
4G of RAM
720 GB of HDD with 5200 rpm
1G of ATI Radeon
I Completely swiped out Mr.Windows 7(useless) and installed Ubuntu.
As said earlier, decided to google and fix the “Thermal Shutdown” issue. I was shocked to see the solution from askubuntu.
Yes, it is typically a BIOS issue and only BIOS upgrade will fix this issue. But HP’s BIOS can’t be upgrad from Linux and requires Windows 7 ( though I thought it was useless, for the first time i’m going to windows 7 for a useful purpose. Windows is great right..?).
But without doing the BIOS upgrade immediately I approached HP technical support. They kicked me and ordered(really they shouldn’t, but they did) to install Mr.Factory OS called windows 7. I don’t want to start 3rd world war, so ended the conversation with HP.
There was no way for me other than installing Windows 7 to upgrade the BIOS. Installed Windows 7 and did the things.
New BIOS was installed and there was no “Thermal Shutdown” warning. Positive!!!.
But now new issue is popping out!!!. Brightness is reset 0 for while booting. Yes, it is ACPI issue. I found no proper solution other than workaround to fix it.
##put it on /etc/rc.local
‘echo 10 | sudo tee>cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness’
Please force the HP to concentrate for these kind of compatibility issue.
